Where Your Three-Year-Old Discovers That School Is a Place They Belong

Our preschool for 3 year olds is built around first friendships, first questions answered, and the confidence — through purposeful play — that they belong.

This Is the Year That Changes Everything — In the Best Way

Three is a remarkable age. Your child is curious about everything. They're asking questions faster than you can answer them. They're watching how other children play and desperately wanting to join in. They're ready — even if it doesn't always feel that way — to take the first brave step into a world beyond home.

Our preschool for 3 year olds at Spark Academy is designed specifically for this moment. Not to rush it. Not to turn playtime into study time. But to give your three-year-old a safe, warm, intentional environment where their natural drive to explore, connect, and learn can run full speed ahead.

Every child who walks into our building is known by name — by their teachers, by Dr. Peterson, and by the small community of classmates they'll grow alongside. The 5:1 student-to-teacher ratio means your child is never one of twenty kids in a room. They're one of ten, in a classroom that feels like home, with adults who have taken the time to understand who they are.

What Makes a Preschool for 3 Year Olds So Important

Dr. Peterson's doctoral research confirms what parents instinctively sense: the preschool years are not a warm-up for learning. They are learning — at the highest intensity the brain will ever experience.

Before your child enters kindergarten, the majority of their neural pathways — the brain's infrastructure for language, reasoning, social skills, and emotional regulation — will already be established. The experiences your three-year-old has right now are building the architecture they'll rely on for the rest of their lives.

That's why we take play seriously.

Every Moment Has a Purpose — Even the Ones That Look Like Play

The 3's daily schedule is structured around one principle: young children learn best when their day has rhythm, variety, and just the right amount of challenge.

Academic Play
1.5 hours

Cognitive skills, early literacy, mathematical thinking, and creative problem-solving through teacher-guided play aligned to curriculum themes.

Developmental Playroom
30 minutes

Creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving in a monthly-rotating, student-driven environment unlike anything else in the area.

Daily Enrichment
30 minutes

A rotating schedule of Spanish, STEM, Art, Communication, and Music & Movement — one subject per day, every day.

Outdoor Play
15 minutes

Gross motor development, physical confidence, and unstructured social time.

Snack & Bathroom Break
15 minutes

Self-care routines, table manners, and the social art of sitting and talking together.

Hours: 8:30–11:30 AM  ·  Schedule Options: Tuesday/Thursday or Monday/Wednesday

The Developmental Playroom — A Spark Exclusive

Every day, your child spends 30 minutes in a dedicated, separate environment unlike anything they'll find at another preschool in the area.

The Developmental Playroom changes completely every month, rotating with our nine curriculum themes throughout the year. One month it's set up for space exploration. The next, an ocean adventure. Each setup intentionally embeds pre-academic skills — but your child just thinks they're having an extraordinary time.

This is the one space at Spark where children are entirely in charge. Teachers support and encourage — but the children lead the play. It's where collaboration happens naturally, where problems get solved creatively, and where social-emotional skills develop through experience rather than instruction.

Enrichment — Five Subjects, Five Days a Week

Every child in the 3's program experiences a different enrichment subject every single day:

Mon Spanish
Tue STEM
Wed Art
Thu Communication
Fri Music & Movement

Most preschools in Central Illinois don't offer a second language. At Spark, Spanish is part of every Monday — not because we expect three-year-olds to become fluent, but because the research on language acquisition is clear: exposing children to a second language during the preschool years builds neural pathways that make learning any language easier for the rest of their lives.

If You're Wondering How Your Child Will Handle Drop-Off — You're Not Alone

It's one of the most common questions we hear from families considering the 3's program: What if my child cries? What if they don't want me to leave?

Here's the honest answer: some children walk in on day one and never look back. Some need a few mornings to find their footing. Both are completely normal — and both are something our teachers are specifically trained to support.

Our building is designed to feel homelike. The environment is calm, warm, and carefully scaled for small children. There are no institutional hallways or overwhelming common areas — there's a classroom that feels like an extension of the spaces your child already knows and feels safe in.

And here's something most schools can't offer: you're welcome to stay. Walk your child to their classroom. Sit in the corner for the first few minutes. Come back mid-morning to peek through the door. There's no point during the day when you're locked out of your child's world — and knowing that makes the first few drop-offs easier for both of you.

Many of our families choose to start with Fresh 3's Fridays — our one-day-a-week introductory program — as a gentle first step before transitioning to a full T/Th or M/W schedule. It's not required, but it's there if you want it. Some children do beautifully jumping straight in. Others thrive when the transition is a little more gradual. We'll help you figure out what's right for your child.

Which Days Are Right for Your Family?

The Tuesday/Thursday and Monday/Wednesday options are equivalent in curriculum and outcomes — the choice is entirely about your family's schedule and what works logistically. Both options follow the same daily rhythm, the same curriculum themes, and the same enrichment rotation.

Not sure your three-year-old is ready for two days a week? Many families start with Fresh 3's Fridays — one morning a week with the same curriculum, the same teachers, and the same classroom experience. When your child is ready for more, adding Monday and Wednesday classes happens organically, no re-enrollment required. It's the path most Spark families take, and it lets your child set the pace.

When your child is ready for more, the 4's Preschool program picks up right where the 3's left off — same philosophy, same teachers, more depth.

Questions About the 3's Program

What is the age requirement for the 3's program?
Children must be three years old by their first day of school and must be fully potty trained. If your child will turn three mid-year, ask us about Fresh 3's Fridays — our rolling-enrollment introductory program that allows children to start on their third birthday.
Does my child need to be potty trained?
Yes. All Spark programs require full potty training before a child's first day. If your child is still working on this milestone, we'd encourage you to reach out — we're happy to talk through timing and what to expect.
How do I choose between T/Th and M/W?
Both options are identical in curriculum, enrichment, and daily schedule. The choice is entirely based on what works best for your family's weekly routine. There's no academic difference between the two.
What is the class size?
The 3's program has a maximum of 10–12 students per class with a 5:1 student-to-teacher ratio. This is among the lowest ratios available at any preschool in the Peoria area.
Can I add days mid-year?
Yes. Many families start with Fresh 3's Fridays and add Monday and Wednesday classes when their child is ready for more. The transition happens organically — no re-enrollment required. Contact us when you're ready and we'll make it simple.
What if my child has a hard time with drop-off?
Separation challenges are common and completely normal for three-year-olds. Our teachers are trained to support the adjustment process, and our homelike environment is specifically designed to ease the transition. We'll communicate with you closely during the first few weeks and will always let you know how your child's day went.
