Why Families Across Central Illinois
Choose Spark Academy

A play-based preschool where every child is known, every moment is intentional, and every beginning is exceptional.

You're not looking for just any preschool. You're looking for the right one — a place where your child is more than a name on a roster. Where the teachers have real credentials. Where the learning is backed by research, not just tradition.

That's Spark Academy.

Built on Research. Delivered with Heart.

What makes Spark different isn't any single thing — it's the combination of doctoral-level leadership, a play-with-a-purpose methodology, genuinely small classes, credentialed teachers, and the kind of transparency that only comes from a school with nothing to hide.

Your Child's Learning Is Designed by a Researcher Who Knows Them by Name

Dr. Michelle Peterson, Ed.D., didn't just earn a doctorate in education — she founded Spark Academy to put that research into practice. Her doctoral work at Illinois State University focused on how young children develop social skills through purposeful play, and that research is embedded in every classroom at Spark.

With 20 years of experience spanning the classroom, school administration, and doctoral research — plus four Illinois teaching certifications — Dr. Peterson leads a school where curriculum decisions are made by someone who has studied how young children actually learn.

Not a corporate office. Not a franchise manual. A researcher and educator who walks the hallways every day.

You're Always Welcome Inside

At some schools, you drop your child off at a door and don't step inside until pickup. You don't see the classroom. You don't talk to the teacher. You trust the brochure and hope for the best.

At Spark, every family is known by name. Ring the bell, check in with a staff member, and you're welcome to walk straight into your child's classroom — no appointment needed. Watch a lesson unfold. Ask a teacher how the morning went. Stay for five minutes or stay for an hour.

When a school has nothing to hide, it has no reason to lock you out.
5:1 Student-to-Teacher Ratio
5:1 Student-to-Teacher Ratio

Small Enough to Know Your Child. Structured Enough to Challenge Them.

At Spark, your child isn't one of twenty-five. Classes are capped at 10–12 students with a 5:1 student-to-teacher ratio — a number that no other preschool in the area matches.

That ratio isn't a marketing number. It's what makes individualization possible. It means teachers can notice when your daughter is ready for a bigger challenge in literacy. It means they catch the moment your son needs support with a social interaction.

The learning plan adapts to who your child is — not just how old they are.

Purposeful Play Framework

Play That Builds Neural Pathways — Not Just Passes the Time

Research shows that young children build the neural pathways for language, problem-solving, executive function, and self-regulation through play — not through worksheets or rote memorization. But not all play is created equal.

The Purposeful Play Framework, developed by Dr. Peterson and built on the Experience Early Learning curriculum, structures every part of your child's day around intentional, research-based learning experiences: academic play sessions, a Developmental Play Room that transforms monthly around new themes, and daily enrichment in Spanish, STEM, art, communication, and music.

All designed to meet your child exactly where they are.

Credentialed Educators — Not Just People Who Like Kids

Every teacher at Spark Academy holds a degree or professional credential in education. That's not standard in this industry — and it matters more than most parents realize.

Credentialed teachers don't just supervise. They observe developmental patterns. They design activities that stretch each child's abilities without overwhelming them. And because Spark is a small, intentional community, these teachers know your family — not just your child's name on a check-in sheet.

They know when a child's behavior is communication, not defiance.
Daily Photos & Updates to Parents
Daily Communication

A Window Into Your Child's World

Every day, your child's teachers post photos and updates through Brightwheel — a dedicated parent communication platform — so you can see exactly what your child experienced.

You'll go from asking "What did you do at school today?" and hearing "I played" to opening your phone and seeing a photo of your daughter building the Leaning Tower of Pisa out of blocks.

Now you have something real to talk about at dinner.

What Your Child's Day Actually Looks Like

Every day at Spark follows a rhythm your child can count on — a balance of academic play, creative enrichment, physical activity, and the kind of purposeful exploration that builds real skills.

Academic Play
1.5–2.5 hours daily

Guided learning experiences in literacy, math, science, and social-emotional development, all delivered through play-based methods. Activities are differentiated based on each child's readiness, not one-size-fits-all worksheets.

Developmental Play Room
30 minutes daily

Spark’s signature — a dedicated space that transforms monthly around a new theme. Children engage in hands-on exploration, dramatic play, and creative building in an environment designed to spark curiosity and independent problem-solving.

Daily Enrichment
30 minutes daily

A rotating schedule of specialist-led activities: Spanish on Monday, STEM on Tuesday, art on Wednesday, communication on Thursday, and music and movement on Friday. Every child, every program, every day.

Outdoor Play
15 minutes daily

Weather-appropriate outdoor time for physical development, gross motor skills, and unstructured social interaction.

Snack and Community Time
15 minutes daily

A moment to practice manners, conversation, and the simple art of sitting together.

Five Principles That Guide Everything We Do

Play with a Purpose

Play is how young children learn. But play with a purpose — guided by research and structured by intention — is how they build the foundations for everything that comes next. Every activity at Spark is designed to develop specific skills through the most powerful learning method available to a young mind.

Relationships First

Children learn best when they feel safe, known, and genuinely cared for. That's why we keep classes small, hire teachers who stay, and build a community where every family is part of something bigger than a roster.

Whole-Child Growth

Academic readiness is important. So are emotional regulation, social confidence, creative expression, and the ability to navigate a world that doesn't come with instructions. Spark develops the whole child — not just the parts that show up on a progress report.

Excellence in Environment

The space where your child learns matters. From the Developmental Play Room that transforms monthly to the homelike classrooms filled with natural light and intentionally chosen materials — every physical detail at Spark is designed to support learning and spark curiosity.

Leadership Through Integrity

We lead with honesty, transparency, and the courage to do what research says is best for children — even when it's harder. Tuition is published. Credentials are verified. Promises are kept.

Enrolling my son at Spark Academy has been the best decision I've made. Michelle and her entire team truly meet each child at their level and begin to foster a love of learning. Most importantly, my son absolutely loves his school and all of his teachers.
